A reliable NAS is not a backup by itself. Use the 3-2-1 approach: keep three copies of important data, on two different media types, with one copy off-site.

For a Synology NAS, use Hyper Backup to an external USB drive and a second destination such as another NAS or a supported cloud provider. Test restoration regularly.
